Thread border routers
If you buy a Thread device and it refuses to connect, the missing piece is usually a Thread border router. It bridges the Thread mesh to your home network.
Do I need one?
- Matter over Wi-Fi device? No border router needed.
- Matter over Thread device? Yes — you need at least one Thread border router in the home.
- HomeKit-over-Bluetooth device? Usually no; but remote access needs an Apple Home hub.
Which devices act as Thread border routers?
Apple's HomePod mini, HomePod (2nd gen) and Apple TV 4K (2nd/3rd gen) double as Thread border routers. Many vendors also ship dedicated border routers (e.g. Aqara Hub M3, SwitchBot Hub 2).
One is enough
Thread networks mesh — one border router covers the whole home, and adding more just strengthens the mesh. For a Thread device that won't pair, check in the Apple Home app under Home Settings → Home Hubs & Bridges that a border router is listed.
